I Introduction This paper investigates the pioneer work of Dr. Sigmund Freud and its influences on the development of Psychology. It assumes that without the innovative work of Freud the domain of psychology would not have reached its level of knowledge in this present-day. II Freud’s work and achievements In the twentieth century, Freud became one of the innovators of modern-day psychology. He questioned the function of our mind thoroughly. He not only contributed a lot to the domain of psychology, but also in literature and arts. His theories influenced how people raised their children. The vocabulary that Freud invented is still being used today, words such as denial, libido, repression, cathartic, Freudian slip, and neurotic.†¦show more content†¦Freud theorized that his client’s psychological problems were established in the unconscious, that the symptoms were caused by unknown inner conflicts. He also believed that the typical cause of the disorder included unsettled issues during crucial time in development. Freud’s treatment focused on bringing forward the repressed conflict to a state of consciousness. In 1905, Freud designed a topographical model of the mind whereby he compared the mind to an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg is the consciousness. The sec ond part of the iceberg juts beneath the tip is the preconscious, it is about all that can be retrieved from memory. The final part of the topographical model is the unconscious and it lies deep below. Later in 1923, Freud developed a structural model of the human personality, he separated it in three branches; the id, the ego and the superego. The Id is the unconscious part of our personality that includes our impulsive behaviours such as our sexual desires and our aggression. The Id demands to have its urges rapidly fulfilled. Feud believed that the Primary thinking process operated the Id, ultimately that the Id is the irrational and illogical part of our personality. The Ego is the part of our persona that makes the decisions based on the urges of our id, the ideal of the superego and the outside world.
